Here's a Marathon CaUl Potatoes Can Love

All that free time over the holidays had us watching TV in a whole new way. 'Twas the season of the cable-TV marathon, a hypnotic  marketing tool that gets us disturbingly amped And we're not the only ones: More and mot networks are running marathons (and not the 26.2-mile kind) to promote their series just fill out a sleepy Sunday afternoon.   And 'Justice' For None?

+ Holy smokes, Batman! The WGA strike has Warner Bros: superhero bonanza Justice League of America in its crosshairs. A source tells EW that filmmakers would like another script rewrite, and are now debating whether to begin shooting without one. The studio has a Jan. 15 deadline to either greenlight League for a spring production start-meaning a summer '09 release-or push it into the post strike ether. (Warner Bros. had no comment.) All seven superheroes have been cast (Adam Brody is in, according to one report), but it remains to be seen whether they'll get to fly this yelll'.

TV winners subscribe to cable

'Mad Men,' 'Longford,' 'Damages,' 'Extras' find favor with HFPA

The 65th Golden Globes went mad for offbeat cable shows Sunday.

It was a big night for AMC's rookie period drama "Mad Men," which won best drama series and best actor in a drama series for star Jon Hamm, while HBO's "Extras" was named best comedy series.

HBO's telefilm "Longford" led the trophy tally with three wins, including best TV movie or miniseries, while HBO dominated the network field with six awards, including a clean sweep of all longform categories.

It was 2-for-2 for basic cable channel AMC, which converted both of its nominations into wins for "Mad Men," its first original series.

"It validates our strategy of putting high-quality cinematic original programming on the air," AMC GM Charlie Collier said via phone from the penthouse at Chateau Marmont, where AMC execs celebrated the wins with "Mad Men" producers and cast.

The victories were an ever stronger validation for "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner, who spent eight years trying to get the show made.

"After I worked for so long to make this happen, making the show was the great reward, and to have the Hollywood Foreign Press recognize it just blew my mind," Weiner said.

Still, not being able to a traditional Golden Globes ceremony took away some of the joy.

"As someone who grew up in Los Angeles, you want to be in that room with the movie stars," Weiner said. "I would've loved to have made a speech and thanked my wife on international television. I've been rehearsing that speech since I was a little boy and would've loved to have given it."

After dominating the nomination field, cable programs swept the Globes, winning all but one category -- best actress in a comedy series, which went to Tina Fey of NBC's Emmy-winning "30 Rock."

"Mad Men" and "Extras" also ended ABC's two-year lock on the best series categories with "Desperate Housewives," "Lost," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Ugly Betty."

'Terminator,' Globes viewers a world apart

NEW YORK -- Fox's "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" terminated Sunday night's primetime competition, including NBC's controversial telecast coverage of the Golden Globes.

On a night when before the writers strike NBC was hoping to shine, it was instead Fox's moment to shine. After getting a 37.3 million viewer boost for the last hour of the New York Giants-Dallas Cowboys NFC semifinal, the network scored the highest broadcast TV premiere in viewership and adults 18-49 in at least two years for "Sarah Connor." At least 18.3 million viewers and a sky-high 7.6 rating/18 share in the demo, according to preliminary estimates released Monday by Nielsen Media Research.

Meanwhile, NBC's nonexclusive Golden Globes telecast averaged 5.8 million viewers -- slightly less than the 6 million viewers who tuned in to see the People's Choice Awards last week. It was a far cry from last year's 20 million viewers for the full ceremony, which represented NBC's best Golden Globes numbers since January 2004. NBC came in fourth place by far in the 9 p.m. hour with its own telecast of the winners; E!, TV Guide Channel and CNN showed the actual news conference. Ratings for them will be out later Monday. NBC's two-hour Globe-themed "Dateline" did even worse, averaging 4.4 million viewers and a 1.1/4. It also dragged down NBC's "American Gladiators" (4.7 million, 1.9/5).

The counterprogram winner for the Golden Globes was clearly ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (13.9 million, 5.5/12), though Fox's "Family Guy" (11.5 million, 5.6/12) got a good bounce from "Sarah Connor." The first of the three-part miniseries "Commanche Moon" (15.7 million, 3.3/8) did well but was beaten in both time periods in adults 18-49.

For the night, Fox (21.9 million, 9.0/21) prevailed over ABC (10.8 million, 3.9/9); CBS (13.1 million, 3.1/7); NBC (4.7 million, 1.4/3); and the CW (1 million, 0.4/1).
