Paramount in final talks for 'Teen'
PARK CITY -- Paramount Vantage is in final negotiations for worldwide
rights (except in the U.K.) to Nanette Burstein's docu "American Teen."
Sources varied widely on the estimated final price for the deal,
expected to close by sunrise Wednesday morning, with figures ranging
from under $1 million to $2.5 million. The A&E Indie Films production
follows four Midwestern high school seniors: a cheerleader, a hipster, a
jock and a band geek. Vantage may partner with its sister outlet MTV to
market the film to a youth audience. As one of the only narrative-driven
docus and one of the few features garnering widespread acclaim on
opening weekend, "Teen" quickly became a hot commodity. Fox Searchlight
and Vantage went after the film following its Saturday afternoon Library
screening, with negotiations going well into Sunday morning. Sony
Pictures Classics also entered into the fray and on Monday morning was
rumored to have closed the deal. Searchlight eventually dropped out in
the $1-$2 million range. On Tuesday evening, after what insiders
described as an unusually protracted negotiation process, SPC dropped
out, leaving Vantage to land the pic. CAA and Cinetic are co-reaping the
deal
Cough Syrup: The New High for Teens
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has
come out with a new warning: your child might be abusing cough syrup.
According to a 2006 survey about 5% of teens and young adults have
admitting to using cough syrup to get high. his is comparable to
LSD usage and surpasses methamphetamine use in the same age range. Over
140 cough and cold medicines have the ingredient that is the cause for
the high feeling, DMX. High amounts of DMX can cause blurry
vision, slurred speech, disorientation and vomiting. White youth are
three times more likely to abuse this than Hispanic youth which come in
second and least likely is black youth

Community invited to benefit for teen
with cancer
JACKSON TOWNSHIP — The community is invited to a ham and
turkey buffet, followed by live musical entertainment, on
Saturday, Feb. 2, from 4 to 10 p.m. at the Jackson Township
Fire Hall on Route 715, across from Reeders United Methodist
Church. The event is a benefit for Pocono Mountain East High
School junior Brandon Burke, 16, of Jackson Township, who
has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Proceeds will go
to helping the family with medical bills. The benefit is
sponsored by St. Mark's Community Lutheran Church in
Appenzell, which the Burke family attends. Live musical
entertainment will be provided by T.B. and the Rock 'n' Roll
Dinosaurs, a group composed of Pocono Mountain school
teachers and principals.The public can buy tickets, which
are $15, and/or donate a raffle prize by calling Jason Smith
at (570) 977-8491.
Huckabee Campaign Out of Gas
Mike Huckabee is asking senior staff members to work
without pay and lower tier workers to either do the same or
take pay cuts as his coffers dry up. Donations are coming in
much slower than expected. Huckabee is trying to run a much
“leaner and meaner campaign” as Super Tuesday approaches.
Currently the former Arkansas Governor is too cash poor to
make a decent showing in Florida which is expected to
consume $7 million. Some of the staff are refusing the
pay cut and walking out creating shortfalls in their
administrative structure.
Heath Ledger is Dead
Australian actor Heath Ledger, recently cast as the Joker
in the next Batman movie, has been found dead in a downtown
Manhattan residence. The death, of which there are currently
no further details, was confirmed by a New York City police
spokesperson
World's Biggest Fast Food Fans are the
Brits
A study of 13 different countries has shown that Britons
consume more fast food than any other western country,
including the United States. Perhaps less surprisingly, the
French are less inclined to indulge in fast food than any
other country. 45 per cent of those Britons surveyed agreed
with the statement: "I like the taste of fast food too much
to give it up", a per centage point ahead of Americans, and
8 per centage points ahead of Canadians. Study leader Steve
Garton said: "The results show there's a world of people who
cannot deny themselves that hamburger or extra piece of
pizza, but probably make themselves feel better by washing
it down with a diet cola." |

UK: Ronnie Campbell, the MP for Blyth
Valley, Northumberland, has been forced
to desperately backtrack after lending
his support to National Fetish Day and
claiming to have a horse fetish without
actually knowing what a fetish was. I
have a purple tie and a purple shirt so
I will be able to wear their colors. I
must have a thousand [fetishes] but,
hand on my heart, I couldn't tell which
is the most important one. Probably the
horses," said the Campbell initially.
The colors purple was chosen because of
its association with bondage. When he
learned what a fetish is Campbell's tune
changed completely. "Oh my God almighty!
I thought a fetish was a worry, like
worrying about backing the right horse."

Passengers
Arrested Over Mobile Phones
Three passengers on an Alitalia
flight were arrested after they refused
to turn off their mobile phones. The
captain of the flight suspected the
signal was messing with his navigation
equipment before take off. He
asked passengers three times to turn off
their phones, and when the problem
persisted, the Italian police were
called in. The three culprits then
refused to turn their phones off, which
led to their arrests. They now face up
to three months in prison. The flight
took off an hour and a half late.

Russia Test-Fires Tactical Missiles
into the Atlantic
Russia has recently fired two tactical missiles into the
Bay of Biscay off the coast of Spain and France, both NATO
allies. The Russian bombers were accompanied by aircraft
carriers, battleships, and submarine hunters from the Black
Sea Fleet. The air force is taking a very active part in the
exercises of the navy’s strike force in the Atlantic...” the
Russian air force released. These tests come at a time when
Russia is trying to find a replacement for President Putin.
There has been no comment from NATO and some analysts point
out that the current military spending by Russia is somewhat
less than that spend by other countries such as China. |
