Dead teen‘s words go straight to the heart
It shook you. No matter how far removed
from the situation you thought you were, what happened at Columbine
High School on April 20, 1999, shook you.
But something good has come from the massacre, that, it seems, two
bullied students thought was the only solution to their pain and
confusion. Today the words of one of the victims are changing the
way young people look at and treat one another all over the world,
and they will be reaching out to the hearts of students in Thunder
Bay this week.
Rachel Scott was the first person shot and killed that day. The
gunmen went on to kill 11 more students and one teacher before
turning their guns on themselves.
Rachel‘s Challenge tells the story of a young girl who had a strong
sense of herself.
In her diaries, Rachel talked about how she would somehow change the
world, even if it was one person at a time, her uncle Larry Scott
said Monday in an phone interview from Colorado.
Scott, whose two children Jeff and Sarah were also in the high
school the day of the shooting, will be in Thunder Bay today and
Wednesday to speak to students and parents at St. Patrick and St.
Ignatius high schools.
He said his niece had written down the way she wished the world
would be and how she wished people would treat each other. So in
honour of the way she lived her life, Rachel‘s family has taken her
wishes and turned them into the largest school assembly program in
the United States.
Four speakers, Rachel‘s uncle Larry, father Darrell, sister Dana and
brother Craig, who was in Columbine‘s library the day of the
shooting when two of his friends on either side of him were shot,
have been all over the United States and Canada, and even to
Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Bermuda and Tasmania to present
Rachel‘s Challenge.
Larry Scott said the focus isn‘t as much on bullying as it is on
kindness and compassion.
“I think it is a universal message that comes along with the
program. What I hope kids take away with them is that it is well
worth it to be nice to one another,” he said.
“We make it so cool to be mean and bad in schools, and kids are
fooled into thinking that if I am mean and bad then I am going to
get attention, but in our presentation we try to focus on being kind
and nice,” he added.
“Let‘s make that cool for a change, let‘s make that the in thing to
do.”
During the presentation, Scott will challenge students to do five
things; eliminate prejudice; dare to dream; choose positive
influences; use kind words; and reach out with random acts of
kindness to start a chain reaction of kindness and compassion with
family and friends.
“It‘s a solid hour of inspirational, emotional and educational
entertainment,‘‘ Scott said about the assembly. “It is just a bit of
everything.
“It isn‘t just (Rachel‘s) story, it is the message within the
story.”
And St. Ignatius principal Pino Tassone said he hopes the message
makes its way into the hearts and minds of his students.
“The purpose of this initiative is to establish a dialogue on
bullying and to provide students, teachers, parents and the
community with strategies to combat bullying in a variety of
different settings,” he said.
Rachel‘s Challenge will be presented to students during the school
day at St. Ignatius today and at St. Pat‘s on Wednesday. The
assembly will also be presented 7-8 p.m. today at St. Ignatius for
the community at large.

16 Year Old Killed by Shark
The Northern New South Wales, Australian town of Ballina is in shock today
after the death, by shark, of a 16 year old boy at Lighthouse Beach.
At around eight in the morning Peter Edmonds,16, was bitten on the left leg
twice while bodyboarding in the surf. His friend Brock Curtis helped the boy to
shore after initially thinking he was joking. Brock tried to resuscitate his
friend.
Family and friends are in total shock and disbelief.
Woman Jailed After Keeping Normal Child in Wheelchair for Five Years
Middlesbrough: A 31-year-old woman has been jailed for 4 years for child
cruelty and administering a noxious substance after she convinced doctors her
normal son needed a medication for a fictitious condition and kept him in a
wheelchair for 5 years.
Authorities were contacted after she accidentally overdosed her son on the
medication. She told a psychiatrist that she invented medical problems for her
son so that he would depend on her and never leave home. She was found not to be
mentally ill.
"She succeeded in engendering in him the belief that he needed a
wheelchair... for 5½ years. This significantly hampered his mobility and social
development. He had seven referrals to paediatricians but no abnormality was
found," said the prosecutor.
Man Jailed for 2¼ Years For Shining Laser at Helicopter
Australia: 23-year-old Lanfranco Baldetti has been jailed for 2¼ years after
being convicted of prejudicing the safe operation of an aircraft by shining a
green laser into the eyes of a police helicopter pilot.
The pilot, who was flying at low altitude over houses, was temporarily
blinded and was forced to squint to safeguard his eyes. He described the laser
as "extremely distracting".
"What occurred here was a disaster in the making. [Actions with the]
potential to create such a serious risk to public safety will not be
tolerated"." said Judge David Smith, adding that a message must be sent to the
public.
Father and Daughter Have Relationship, Children Together
South Australia: John Deaves and his daughter Jenny have been sentenced to
three year good behaviour bond and ordered to discontinue their sexual
relationship. They began sleeping together weeks after being reunited following
a 30 year separation.
The relationship has produced two children. The first died of congenital
heart disease within days of birth and the second, 9-month-old Celeste, seems
healthy so far. Mrs Deaves has two offspring from a former relationship.
According to a US psychologist this is a case of 'Genetic Sexual Attraction',
a phenomenon which is reportedly much more common than most people realise. The
pair are being monitored by police.

to a secret plan leaked to the British Daily The Guardian .The
plan places no time limits nor legal status or powers on US
troops in the country.
The confidential draft agreement marked “secret” allows the
US forces to "conduct military operations in Iraq and to detain
individuals when necessary for imperative reasons of security" .
The document states that the US "does not desire permanent
bases or a permanent military presence in Iraq" although no time
limits are set for the US and international forces presence in

Do You Have Resistant Hypertension?
Resistant hypertension is a condition which can be fatal and requires
specialist treatment. If the patient has this type of blood pressure usually
three or more medications are being taken and the problem still persists.
The American Heart Association states in its guidelines that high blood
pressure afflicts 30% of people. About 1 billion people are affected globally by
high blood pressure. Causes may be due to high salt intake and sleep apnea.
Resistant Hypertension may also have a hormonal underlying cause and kidney
problems and diabetes may also be likely culprits. Dr. Calhoun of Alabama's
University says specialist tailored treatment is the best option. |
