Teens getting wrong message, judge says

Parents can be better prepared to protect their children if they understand what their children are being exposed to, said Superior Court Judge Danny Craig. "If you're of the opinion that your children are not constantly bombarded by some of the most blatant suggestions, then you're deaf, dumb and blind, because the media that you grew up with in the '50s or '60s or '70s is not at all what the media is today," he said in a speech to the Episcopal Day School Parent Association on March 11.Do it if it feels good. Do it if you're enjoying your life. Do it regardless of respect to others, because you only have one life to live and you need to live it to the fullest," he said. "That's the message that your children are getting from the media."In his presentation, Choices for a Lifetime: What the Entertainment Industry Won't Tell You About the Life It Glamorizes, Judge Craig discussed teen and parent responsibilities with respect to alcohol, marijuana and other drugs, criminal history, bullying and Internet crimes, as well as the consequences of each. What might seem "not that bad" can have tough consequences, he told the parents. For example, he often tells students that there is no such thing as a "cheap joint.""I can't stop you; your parents can't stop you; and none of us are going to fool ourselves to suggest that we can. But don't think that it's just a $5 joint of marijuana," he said. The cost, he told the students, could end up being a lot more.Parents have to stop letting the media be their baby sitters, Judge Craig said. "You have to turn the television off to save your child." He said he hoped that parents understood from his presentation how important their jobs are."Parenting can never be put on automatic pilot. There are no days off," he said. "Every missed opportunity to mentor a child subjects a child to dramatic and sometimes traumatic consequences."

Police Launch Full-Scale Investigation Into Gnome Sightings

Recent sightings of a gnome lurking around in a town in Argentina [SN Reported] has terrified so many people that a full-scale investigation by police has been launched by the mayor. Despite his own skepticism, he said can't rule out their existence.

"People here believe in them and we have to respect that. I do not think that it is completely impossible. Gnomes are part of our culture here," he said. Gnome sightings go back decades from hundreds of witnesses, including the detective in charge.

"I personally believe in gnomes as I saw one when I was a child. But so far we have not been able to determine whether the figure on tape was real or not," said José Luis Núñez, Police Commissionaire.

Obama Teases McCain for Misunderstanding Terrorism

In a speech on Iraq, Sen. Barack Obama needled Sen. John McCain for apparently confusing the loyalties of Iran. "Just yesterday, we heard Sen. McCain confuse Sunni and Shiite, Iran and al-Qaeda," Obama said.

"Maybe that's why he voted to go to war with a country that had no al-Qaeda ties," Obama added. McCain repeatedly said that Iran is supplying al-Qaeda in a news conference; it took Joe Lieberman whispering in his ear to set him straight.

Iran is an overwhelmingly Shiite nation, while al-Qaeda is comprised of the rival Sunni faction, and there is no alliance between the nation and the terrorist organization. McCain apologized and said Iran is supplying "extremists."

Strokes May be Less Likely to Kill Obese

A study of over 20,000 stroke patients in Denmark has shown that obese patients may be more likely to survive a stroke than their healthy-weight counterparts. The patients were followed up five years after suffering their strokes.

The Hvidovre University Hospital found that overweight, obese and severely obese patients were 27, 16 and 16 per cent more likely to still be alive at the follow up than those patients who were a normal weight at the time of their stroke.

Underweight patients were 63% more likely to die compared with healthy-weight stroke sufferers.

Corn Flake Auction Removed From Ebay

The two sisters from Virginia who were selling a cornflake shaped like the state of Illinois were notified by email that the auction site Ebay has cancelled their listing, citing violation of the auction site's food policy.

As previously reported here, two sisters from Virginia found an unusually shaped cornflake in their box of cereal. Looking like the state of Illinois, the sisters decided to put the cornflake up for auction on Ebay with bids upwards of over $200.

Ebay has allowed the sisters to relist the auction for the cornflake as a redeemable coupon in exchange for the cornflake, specifying that the cornflake is "not edible" in the listing.
