Man Sues Wife for Nagging, Impotence

An Italian man is reported to be suing his wife in excess of US$300,000, citing her constant nagging - and the resulting deleterious effects upon his health.

Sergio Vinucci has apparently amassed medical evidence suggesting that his wife's nagging was so chronic that he suffered severe distress, and eventually became impotent.

“All she ever does is complain. It is extremely stressful and it has left me unable to be a man.” It has not been determined whether his request for compensation is likely to be successful.

Detectives Hope to Apprehend 3 in The Jersey Colditz Children’s Home

Chief Officer Lenny Harper spoke out how he had been up against continual hindrance from retired policemen attempting hide their failure to examine allegations of maltreatment at Haut de la Garenne, children’s home.

Yesterday residents in the hundreds shared their grief at St Helier for the victims expressing their anger at what they called Jersey’s “culture of secrecy”. Victims reveal that children were forced to watch sexual abuse against friends.

Deputy Chief Officer Lenny Harper said “There have been stacks of it. Mainly from corrupt cops who have got friends in among senior politicians on the island. I would not insult the island by saying there is a culture of corruption;

A Previous employee at the Jersey children’s home threaten victims

McCain Loses His Temper Over Question About Kerry

Sen. John McCain, sometimes called "Senator Hothead" because of his temper, flashed it again when a reporter asked him about a private conversation McCain had in 2004 with Sen. John Kerry on the possibility of McCain running as Kerry's VP candidate.

Asked about the conversation by a New York Times reporter in New Orleans, McCain said: "Everybody knows that I had a private conversation. Everybody knows that, that I had a conversation. And you know it, too. No. You know."

The reporter had found that McCain had denied having such a conversation in May of 2004. McCain, clearly irate, continued to interrupt the reporter as she tried to ask follow-up questions about his conversation with Kerry.

Patient Walks out of Operating Room, Citing Dead Rats

A 19-year-old UK man scheduled to undergo a knee operation apparently got more than he bargained for when he attended the Queen Elizabeth's hospital. After waiting 11 months to correct the painful soccer injury, he prepared for the procedure. As he entered the operating room a foul smell caught his senses, and he inquired as to its source. The doctors were more than willing to inform him that it was the smell of a rotting rat carcass, putrefying somewhere nearby. He said the smell didn't represent a health risk but I was appalled," said the patient. He refused the operation, and hospital employees eventually found the rodent's corpse on the roof. The patient is attempting to reschedule his operation.

NYPD Blue" Star Not Charged with Rape

"NYPD Blue" star Esai Morales will not face charges of raping his ex-girlfriend after the LA County DA's office rejected the case. A lack of evidence was cited in reasoning for the case rejection.

Richard Charnley, attorney for Morales, said: "I'm happy that my client was vindicated. He was never questioned by the police, never taken into custody, there were never any charges brought against him."

Morales's ex, Elizabeth Mazzocchi, accuses Morales of raping her in April, 2006. Morales has always denied the accusation, and Mazzicchi has also sued in a civil suit, stating Morales raped her and she contracted herpes from it.

Sony, MS in Talks to Put Blu-ray on Xbox

Sony is in talks with its console rival Miscrosoft to allow the software giant to use Sony's Blu-ray technology in its Xbox console. The talks come after Toshiba pulled out of competitions with Sony and removed HD DVDs from the market (SN reported).Microsoft and Apple have both been pushing the digital format model, which many analysts believe will be the thing that beats Sony's Blu-ray victory. If the Xbox gets Blu-ray capabilities, it will be on a more level playing field with the PS3.Analyst Mike Goodman says: "You have to remember that for Microsoft, HD DVD was always a delaying action. Microsoft doesn't believe in Blu-ray and it didn't believe in HD DVD. Microsoft believes in digital distribution."

Device helps find and detail digital hotspots

Canary Wireless Model HS-20 weighs 2.5 ounces and offers several new and improved features. Around four years ago, I wrote about a little device that had the ability to locate hotspots. A hotspot is simply defined as a location that has Wi- Fi access. Back then, hotspots were still fairly uncommon and hard to find. Back then, the only option you really had to see whether a Wi-Fi signal was available was to pull out your notebook computer and turn it on. The Digital Hotspotter from Canary Wireless was a godsend because you could now just press its little button and see if there was Wi-Fi available. And not only could it detect the presence of a Wi-Fi signal, it would also tell you whether it was open or locked, the name it had been given (Its SSID), it displayed the strength of the signal and it also told you what channel it was using. But as Wi-Fi has continued to expand, so have its number of options and configurations. So Canary Wireless has just introduced the Model HS-20, its next generation of the Digital Hotspotter. The new model is slightly larger but slimmer than the HS-10, weighs 2.5 ounces and offers several new and improved features. It also just looks a lot nicer in its shiny black case. The first and most noticeable is that its 96-by-64- pixel LCD screen is now backlit. If there was one new feature on my wish list for this device, that would have been the one. Too many times, I’ve found myself not being able to read the display simply because the room I was in at the moment was too dark. Some of the features remain but they have been improved. For example, the signal strength indicator on the old model used only three indicator bars. The new one offers five vertical bars, which serves to give you a more accurate measurement of the Wi-Fi’s signal strength. The older model required you to repeatedly press its one button to force the Hotspotter to rescan for multiple hotspots in the same location. Now the unit performs a single scan for any and all available Wi-Fi signals at the same time. On the side of the device is a scroll button that lets you easily access multiple access points from the single scan. You just highlight an access point’s name and you instantly see all of the network’s details such as its type, security and channel configuration. Before, you could only see if a network was locked or open. Now the Hotspotter can identify the type of encryption being used such as WEP, WPA, WPA2 and CCX. You will also see the type of Wi-Fi being used such as 802.11 b, g or n, which wasn’t even around when the first model was designed. In addition, the HS-20 can scan 14 channels. While only 11 are used in the United States, 13 are used for Wi-Fi in Europe and 14 in Japan making the HS-20 useful when you go overseas. This is important because channel information can be useful in detecting potential reasons for interference. Most access points are set to channel 1, 6 or 11 by default. If you see more than one network on the same channel, it is likely that you may experience problems with interference. Taking this a bit further, Wi- Fi channels can overlap on adjacent channels and might cause interference. You may wish to use the Hotspotter when configuring your home or office network to determine what channels are least likely to experience interference.  Another nice touch is the addition of a battery strength indicator. While I always made it a point to carry two additional AAA batteries, now at least I can see when I’m going to need them before the unit just quits. As with its predecessor, the HS-20 uses a true 802.11 engine, which basically means that unlike other devices that make an attempt to just show you that there’s a Wi-Fi signal nearby, you won’t receive false positives from the presence of other wireless standards such as Bluetooth.  I’m glad to see that Canary took its time coming out with its new model. From this newer one, it’s clear that they were listening to its users and they’ve come up with something that has adapted to the newer standards as well as being much more user friendly with its ability to scan multiple points with a single scan. My older one served me well but the HS-20 is a welcome new addition.  The HS-20 Digital Hotspotter is now available from the Canary Wireless Web site and sells for $59.95

TechFest offerings range from cells to stars

Microsoft’s “Lucid Touch” technology allows Patrick Baudisch to perform touch-screen operations from behind device.

REDMOND, Wash.  Microsoft researchers from around the world gathered at the software maker’s headquarters last week to show off projects dealing with subjects as tiny as individual cells and as large as the universe.

The WorldWide Telescope, an application that lets computer users zoom from one galaxy to the next, was an atypically tangible demonstration at the annual science-fair-like gathering that usually shows off early-stage prototypes.

Researcher Curtis Wong, who had walked journalists through a bare-bones version of the program a year ago, showed how users can explore on their own or take a guided tour designed by an astronomer. The program, which knits together images from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, among others, will be freely available sometime in the spring.

Other groups demonstrated projects that use data collected from sensors for more terrestrial purposes. Researchers based in the United Kingdom showed how a system of sensors, radio frequency identification tags and GPS data were combined to track the feeding habits of a local bird population, as a way to understand how changes in climate and other variables affected the species.

Another team displayed lightweight sensors that can fit in the palm of the hand and can last four years on two AA batteries. They pass along information “like a bucket brigade,” Redmond-based researcher Feng Zhao said, using protocols developed for the Internet that his group modified to use less energy and memory.

Zhao said one practical application would be more efficient heating and cooling of warehouse-size data centers, depending on which small areas the sensors reported were too hot or too cold.

Microsoft researcher Patrick Baudisch demonstrated how “LucidTouch” technology allowed users of touch-screen devices such as GPS units or mobile phones could perform operations from behind the device so their actions wouldn’t block their view of the display.

The “LucidTouch” device uses a camera mounted behind the unit, but researchers hope to eventually integrate the necessary sensors into the back panel of the device.

There were also tools designed especially for scientists, from an application that helps them “program” without having to write code to an entirely new programming language to model cellular processes.

A handful of rough prototypes were built to ease common frustrations of today’s Web-savvy PC user. Researchers devised an Internet Explorer plug-in for people in different locations to save search results and share notes; they also came up with a plug-in that makes the pages visited during a Web search session more accessible.

Other researchers built on existing social networking services. One project gave people reading e-mail in Microsoft Outlook more information about the senders and other recipients, including photos and past e-mails.

Another helped people consolidate their friends’ social network profiles from different sites in one place.

Microsoft has 800 researchers in six labs around the world.
