Teen Sitcom To Film In Ottawa
Ottawa has landed the plum job of playing host city for a new $10 million sitcom. The family series "Dad's in the Attic" will film at a defunct Ottawa high school, Montreal-based independent production house Muse Entertainment announced Thursday. This is what we call, by Canadian terms, a premiere series," Jesse Prupas, Muse's VP of development and distribution, told CBC News.
We try to be modest about talking about the figures, but this is a $10 million project. … It's very, very exciting. It's much larger than anything we've brought here."
The half-hour live-action comedy, which will air on YTV next year, follows three teenage siblings and their newly-fired workaholic dad, who decides to set up an office at home.
Twenty-six episodes of the hi-def series will be shot at the former Laurentian High School in Ottawa's west end. The school closed in 2004 because of low enrolment.
Some of the school will also be turned into mini-studio space. Ottawa doesn't usually attract major scripted TV productions, and "Dad's in the Attic" will be the biggest TV production the city has ever had.
The show, which has begun casting, will film this spring and summer, likely with the aid of crew from the Ottawa area.

Israel and the US Removed From Canadian 'Torture' List

The US has called a document produced by the Canadian foreign minister Maxime Bernier 'absurd' after they, along with Israel, were placed on it for permitting torture. "We find it to be offensive for us to be on the same list with countries like Iran and China. Quite frankly it's absurd," said David Wilkins, the US ambassador to Canada, who added that they've been ordered or directed to rewrite it.

Police Sergeants and Detective Arrested

Federal authorities have arrested two NYPD sergeants and a detective on charges relating to drug corruption. Sgt. Roosevelt Green, 45, exchanged his badge for some clothes and a pair of shoes in exchange for information about license plates. The plates identified the undercover police cars that were trailing Frank Wilson, a major player in the drug world. Green was released on bail. In an unrelated case, two policemen, one Sgt. Micheal Arenella and Detective Jerry Bowens, were arraigned for stealing 40 dollars and two bags of crack from a junkie, who was an undercover policeman, and then returning it in exchange for information.

N.Y.Police Make Fun Of Dying Man

Rene Perez was found, apparently dead on the side of a Bedford road. A local police officer called his sergeant when Perez temporarily revived and was taped saying "You wanna hear something really funny? He's alive". An hour later Perez died.
Another police sergeant was heard later on a recording singing "Walk Away Renee". The officers were chuckling at the unfortunate Perez on the recording. George Bubaris, a Mount Kisco police officer is charged with manslaughter in the death of Perez. Prosecutors say he dumped Perez in Bedford, struck him fatally in the stomach and left him to die.

Colorado Murder Convict Innocent

Timothy Masters was convicted of a murder that took place when he was fifteen. A special prosecutor is asking a judge to vacate his conviction because of the original prosecutors' withholding of evidence from his defense team.  Independent DNA analysis results matched a different suspect, state tests showed. His conviction was based on a psychological analysis, his hand-drawn pictures, and that he had seen the body and did not report it. Dr. Richard Hammond, an eye doctor who lived nearby, committed suicide in 1995 after police, considering him as a possible suspect, accused him of secretly videotaping the genitalia of female house guests. He was recently excluded due to DNA evidence.

Russia Threatens Use of 'Nuclear Weapons'

Russia's military chief said Russia would consider using its nuclear weapons in any conflict with the west, this in response to the west's determination to build a missile defense system in former Soviet Republics. He said they do not intend to attack anyone but reserves to right to defend its sovereignty and its allies, this of course is in accordance with their military doctrine. Retired Gen. Vladimir Dvorkin, formerly a top arms control expert with the Russian Defense Ministry, said he saw "nothing new" in Baluyevsky's statement. "He was restating the doctrine in his own words," Dvorkin said.

Arizona Harvests Speeders

Arizona governor Janet Napolitano says the use of photo radar and other speeder apprehension technology is about safety, not just income. The state has a projected budget shortfall of 1.2 billion dollars in the next fiscal year. The governor's proposed budget anticipates 120 million from speed fines in the coming year and even more in future years. Governor Napolitano said, "It wasn't designated primarily for revenue generation but since we have it (and) it works, we want to move statewide." Senate Transportation Chairman Ron Gould said "It smacks of Big Brother to me."
