Celebrate Teen Tech Week March 2 to 8

Here’s something guaranteed to get kids excited: the theme of this year’s Teen Tech Week, from March 2 to 8, is "Tune In @ Your Library." More than 1,500 libraries nationwide have said they'll  participate by showcasing youth-friendly technology that enhances literacy skills and offers tips on staying safe.

La Puente Library in Los Angeles County plans to offer a digital photography class for teens and offer gift card giveaways for correct answers to scavenger hunt queries about databases and other online resources. A lesson on Web safety and privacy will be offered through an activity that encourages kids to shop online for books to add to the library’s YA collection. Teens also can look forward to Guitar Hero and Dance, Dance Revolution as part of the week of fun.

The Forest Hill branch of the Queens Borough Public Library in New York, meanwhile, will launch a "Tech Buddies" program that matches teens with seniors who want to become more tech-literate. Safety issues will be highlighted, along with the entertainment potential of technology.

Studies show that most teens lack the critical thinking skills needed to conduct effective online searches. At the same time, in 2006 the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire reported that only one-third of students surveyed were learning about Internet safety at school.

Sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association, Teen Tech Week aims to ensure that teens become competent, ethical users of technology, especially as they use nonprint resources such as DVDs, databases, audiobooks, and video games. Dungeons and Dragons is this year's Teen Tech Week corporate sponsor. To learn more about Teen Tech Week, visit YALSA online.

Early Morning Earthquake Rattles England

An earthquake measuring magnitude 4.7 shook people in parts of England early Wednesday morning. The 1 a.m. quake was centered 127 miles north of London,
with no reports of injuries or damage.

Lukwesa Burak, a reporter for England's Sky News said of the earthquake at her home in central England "It was like a huge freight train outside the front door. The entire house started to shake."

Despite the earthquake rattling nerves throughout most of England, tremors of this type and size are uncommon there.

Man Holds Up Store, Returns Next Day to Ask Cashier for Date

Italy: A 31-year-old man who held up a Genoan post office has returned to the business he robbed to ask the woman he forced to hand over money at gunpoint on a date. He reportedly couldn't get the young woman out of his head.

Bruno Perez attempted to woo her with flowers and some of the money he had stolen the previous day. The 21-year-old object of his affections activated a silent alarm and played along until police arrived and arrested him.

"It seems he could not resist coming back to ask her out, even though he knew the risks," said a police spokesperson.

Man Sues PD After Officer Gets His Gun and Taser Mixed Up

Canada: Daniel Hammond is suing the police department after an officer accidentally shot him in the abdomen during an arrest in late 2005. Constable Mike Miller, the officer who shot him, resigned in January.

Hammond had reportedly been causing a disturbance outside a restaurant and resisted when police attempted to arrest him. Miller reached for his Taser to subdue Hammond but came up with his Glock instead and shot the 25-year-old.

At that time the police were using a Taser that is very similar in feel to the police firearm. Since that time the force has switched to a Taser with a different feel. The government in British Columbia is currently holding an inquiry into Tasers.

UK Approves Nicotine Patches for Children

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recommended the production of nicotine patches for children as young as 12, who may have a heavy smoking problem. The recommendation from NICE means it is now official policy in England.

Last year, the minumum age of buying tobacco in the UK was raised from 16 to 18. At that time, 9% of children aged 11-15 smoked. NICE said that children should only be offered nicotine replacement therapy "when there is clear... nicotine dependence."

Maxim' Apologizes for Reviewing Album It Hadn't Heard Yet

In the March 2008 edition of Maxim magazine, the Black Crowes' new album 'Warpaint' is given two-and-a-half out of five stars. The Crowes responded with an exasperated announcement on their Web site that advance copies hadn't been released yet.

According to Black Crowes manager Pete Angelus, the magazine explained to him that its review was "an educated guess." Then Maxim announced that its policy is to assign star ratings only to albums that have been heard in their entirety.

'Warpaint' is the first Black Crowes release in seven years, and thus far, only the track "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution" has been released.

'Ali Lohan Wants to be Just Like Sis’

Young Ali Lohan, fourteen year old sister of trouble-maker Lindsey Lohan, has claimed that she wants to grow up to be just like her big sister.

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Ali revealed, “I grew up watching Lindsay. It made me want to do what she does. Just the whole vibe. Being there, being on camera, or onstage, with everybody listening to you. It's so cool when people look up to you. I've already been asked for my autograph and it's just a really good feeling to have.”

And it seems she won’t have to wait long, as she is already filming a new reality series for E!, documenting her acting career and upcoming album.

With Ali’s eyes set for singing, acting and even fashion designing it is evident that the teen will not stop until she reaches her goals, stating in the interview that her aspirations are “- really bad, so bad. So bad you don't even know.”

We’ll keep our eyes peeled for the future starlet on E!, and perhaps in High School Musical 3.
