Abandoned Babies Saved
Between August 2004 and December 2007, 13 abandoned baby girls and 3 baby
boys were discovered and reported to the pediatrics department of All India
Institute of medical Services. This trend has left the population ratio of men
to women unbalanced.
Many of these babies are found in fields, in sacks, abandoned in wards, and
even labor rooms. The babies are sent to care centers through a Child Welfare
Committee. They are monitored until they are rehabilitated through adoption.
A program officer of UNICEF, says: “Lakhs of children are in need of care but
our CWCs are able to deal with only a few thousand. The gap in providing
facilities is the biggest lacuna, hence the government needs to create necessary
infrastructure.”
Catch a Monkey for Money
Catching a monkey in Himachal Pradesh can fetch you 400 rupees. The proposal,
if accepted by the government, will be introduced in monkey infested zones.
The captured primates will be shifted to primate protection centers that are to
be set up.
In the past the government had captured monkeys with the help of experts from
urban centers and shifted them to rural areas. This had angered the villagers
and farmers.
The state government is also carrying out monkey sterilizations. Only 1,000
out of 30,000 monkeys have been sterilized.
Parents Charged After Infant Neglected in Car Seat for Eight Days
21-year-old Tracey Hermann and 23-year-old James Sargent of Peoria, IL are
charged with first-degree murder for leaving their five-month-old baby strapped
in his portable car seat for eight days. The infant died of starvation and
neglect.
Still wearing his snow suit in an 80-degree room, the sepsis caused by waste
collected beneath 5-month-old Benjamin eventually ate away at his buttocks and
legs. His hands were clenched and his eyes were open and fixated straight ahead.
Tracey left Benjamin with James to see a boyfriend she met on the internet,
tucking a bottle next to Benjamin in case he was hungry. Both are eligible for
the death penalty, and their 3-year-old daughter has been removed from their
custody.
