400 gather for festival in honor of slain teen

Nearly 400 people participated in a mile walk and 5k run to support the Jackie Hartman Memorial Foundation Saturday at Freestone Park. The Jackie Hartman Memorial Foundation Community Spirit Celebration was an occasion to give thanks to the community for its efforts in assisting the search for Hartman, the 19-year-old woman who went missing in January 2007 and found dead a month later. It's to celebrate the community," said Hartman's father, David. "It's not about us, it's about them, to thank them." He wore a bright pink Jackie Hartman Memorial shirt as he ran around the event making, sure everything was in order. Her family is still thankful for the public support." A lot of us participated in searching for Jackie and the experience changed us and a lot of us wanted to celebrate her spirit," said Karen Nolan, part of the committee that helped set up the event. It was a brisk and cloudy morning with damp grounds, but the pink and white balloons scattered around the event remained true to the welcoming mood among participants and volunteers. Organizers were expecting about 700 but attribute the lowered participation to the bad weather. Once the race was over, participants headed over to the lunch and entertainment area. "The race was a lot of fun, the people were friendly," said Steve Brietweiser from Awahtukee. He added that the event was a good cause and that he would come back another year if the event continued. The memorial foundation held a raffle with more than $12,000 in donations of cash and prizes. The money raised is going to the Jackie Hartman Memorial Foundation to provide nursing scholarships and to aid families searching for missing young adults, said Kelly Bennett, a member of the board of directors for the foundation. The foundation is in the process of choosing the first nursing scholarship recipient.  Foundation officials chose Freestone Park for the event because it was near where Jackie lived and Gilbert residents stepped up to help the cause, Bennett said. "I think it's absolutely overwhelming and amazing," Bennett said. "It's the feeling of a small town again."

Sex Starved Woman Calls Emergency Line 700 Times, Offers to Start Fire to Get 'Hunky Fireman'

Poland: 42-year-old Hanna Wozniak is facing potential jail time after being charged with making threatening phone calls and wasting emergency services' time over 700 calls she made to the emergency line seeking a partner for sex.

The woman went as far as to suggest to the emergency services' operators that she was willing to start fires if a "hunky fireman" would join her in bed after it was extinguished.

Police traced the calls and arrested Wozniak. A spokesperson for police described her actions as "extremely irresponsible". She reportedly told police, "I was desperate for sex. It’s been so long since I had someone in my bed."

Suck my D F Face” And Here’s the Bill

Joe Delucci's Italian restaurant in Staffordshire has apologized for the bill issued to some clients who complained about the service.

When the bill arrived the disgruntled customers were surprised to see an entry saying “suck my d*** f*** face”

One of the customers said they thought the message was related to their complaints about the service. The restaurant owner explained that the message was only meant to bee seen by kitchen staff and didn’t know how it was printed on the bill.

Mrs. Clinton Says Daughter Chelsea Doesn't Do "Real Work" on Wall Street, Promises a Fair Tax System

At a roundtable discussion in Parma, Ohio, Senator and presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton was reported to have said hedge fund managers and investment bankers on Wall Street do not do "real work".

Mrs. Clinton's daughter Chelsea is on the payroll of the New York hedge fund Avenue Capital Group. She has also been employed by McKinsey & Company, another New York based company.

Senator Clinton also complained on Monday in Wisconsin about hedge funds and incomes, saying that she would create a fair tax system to make sure hedge fund dealers with 50 million dollar incomes pay their fair share of taxes.

Chinese Pills for Penis Failure Seized - May Cause Heart Failure

Netherlands: Customs officials have seized a large number of pills labelled as herbal remedies for the treatment of impotence. While the pills contained chemicals used to treat impotence the dosage was dangerously high.

Dutch authorities have issued a worldwide alert to safety authorities over the issue. The pills were being sold as 'Natural Vigour', 'China Vigour', and 'Herb Vigour'. China has been dogged by safety problems in manufacturing recently.

"It cannot be ruled out that taking these so-called herbal remedies could lead to serious health problems such as heart failure or reduced vision," said the Inspectorate in a statement.

CD Only Audible to Dogs Tops NZ Charts

"A Very Silent Night", a song recorded at a frequency only audible to dogs as a fundraiser for the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has surprised everyone by topping the charts.

While the track is inaudible to humans many pet owners claim their dogs have pricked up their ears, wagged their tail, and even danced to the tune. One dog reportedly went 'ballistic' after someone across the road played it at high volume.

Plans are now underway to sell the song internationally. Some doubt has been cast on the authenticity of the recording, however, with at least one person claiming to have checked it with an oscilloscope and found no audio at any frequency.

Teen party causes Mayor Katz, organizers to feel heat

Organizers of a teen dance party are pointing fingers at each other while some parents fume over violence, drug use and so-called "skanky" behaviour they saw late Sunday night when picking up their kids from the event at a downtown bar.

Police descended on Sonar Nightclub on Garry Street in response to reports of weapons and drugs carried by several youths at the bar and others trying to get into the non-alcohol bash held there by Feel Tha Heat Entertainment.

"It was disaster night. Our guards were continuously breaking up fights," Sonar co-owner Scott Hjorleifson said yesterday of his security staff, which also found itself overwhelmed during a rush by customers for their coats toward the end of the party.

"Probably only 10% to 20% of the kids at this event were a problem -- but when you have 400-plus people, that's a lot of kids who are problems."

Cheryl Sheffield, whose daughter attended with friends, slammed organizers of the event, which she said left some teens in fear of being "crushed in a mob" while several coats were grabbed, strewn or stolen.

She blasted Mayor Sam Katz for previously giving Feel Tha Heat a video endorsement on the local firm's website. "My girls and numerous other kids were feeling scared and overwhelmed with this situation. Security didn't move," Sheffield said.

Hjorleifson and bar co-owner Chris Kanski accuse Feel Tha Heat proprietor Jamie Hall of creating an atmosphere they say invited unruliness and led to at least $1,500 in damage.

Hall, however, said Sonar and its "scared" security staff were ill-prepared for the packed house and were unwilling to take sufficient action to quell problems.

"And they buckled under the pressure," Hall said. "If there were drugs in the bathroom, that's their security failing at the door."

Katz withdrew his endorsement from Feel Tha Heat when news emerged of the party's unruliness, and said he had given the firm a plug in 2006 because of similar previous teen events that were run well.

"The concept makes a lot of sense," Katz said. "And I hope someone comes along and does it in a properly controlled environment."
