Warning over teen drinks epidemic
The country urgently needs to wake up to the epidemic of
binge-drinking among teenagers and the misery it causes, a
police chief has warned.
Ken Jones, president of the Association of Chief Police
Officers, also issued a stinging rebuke to parents who
supply their underage children with booze, citing police
data showing up to 50% are getting it from parents.
And he condemned the drinks industry for targeting the
young and exporting its "negative costs onto the streets,
hospitals and into the criminal justice system".
"We need to take a hard look at this and whether we
should we really be looking to make profits on the back of
this sort of misery," he told the BBC.
The warning comes amid heightened concerns about the
issue after a spate of high-profile crimes involving
underage drinkers, including the murder of Garry Newlove.
Mr Jones demanded: "Why is it we have got ourselves into
a position where lager is being sold cheaper than water? Why
is it we have got huge entertainment and drinks companies
marketing alcohol to children?
"We've got a generation of binge-drinkers now who have
become habituated to that."
And he added: "We have got to ask ourselves why we have
these products developed in the way they are, why in the
middle of some of the most already-struggling estates there
are outlets for some of this cheap stuff and why it is we
continue to see products developed solely targeted at young
people.
"Elements of the industry are taking their role much more
seriously, but I have to say many more are not.
"We can't allow them to continue to export their negative
costs on to the streets, hospitals and into the criminal
justice system. It's got to stop."

metres. In 2007, it was named as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World
Police Seek Medium-Rare to Well Done Criminal
Police are searching for a likely charred thief who made an
unsuccessful attempt to steal copper cable carrying 11,000 volts with a hacksaw.
His efforts left hundreds of homes without power for several hours.
Police believe that the thief is probably quite badly scorched as a result of
his experience and have monitored local hospitals without result. When the
hacksaw hit the line the immediate area would have been showered in molten
copper.
"The sheer stupidity of cutting through power cables should be glaringly
obvious to everyone... We can only assume they left in a great hurry or they
were injured and were dragged away by an accomplice," said Phil Wilson from
Central Networks..

50 chickens found loose in Philly school
PHILADELPHIA - Monday mornings are hard enough. Imagine finding
50 chickens running loose in your high school.
Workers arriving about 5:30 a.m. to open Northeast High School in
Philadelphia found dozens of hens and roosters wandering around the
hallways. The birds were apparently brought to the school sometime
over the weekend, said school district spokesman Fernando Gallard.

CIA Controlling the News ?
A new book by Dexter Filkins claims that the CIA and American intelligence
agencies have taken over the news outlets to control what information is being
told to the general public and that the public is swallowing their stories hook
line and sinker.
The book gives as an example a supposed letter from Abu Musab al Zarqawi in
which he described how al-Qa'ida should promote a civil war in Iraq. The letter
was touted as “credible” when in fact it was most likely the work of black
propaganda.
The letter is one of many such scripts which was fed to news agencies who
reproduced them without questioning their authenticity says Filkins in a move to
manipulate public perceptions of current events.
