Brit Gets 4 Years in Dubai Prison For
Speck of Pot Smaller Than a Sugar Grain on His Shoe
West Midlands youth worker Keith Brown has received a
four-year jail term in Dubai for a piece of cannabis found
on the bottom of his shoe so small that it can't be seen
with the naked eye. He was returning from Ethiopia where he
has family and land.
Another man has awaited sentencing since November for a
similar amount of cannabis. The UAE's zero-tolerance drug
laws have also jailed a Swiss man who customs officials
found with three poppy seeds that fell off a bread roll at
Heathrow Airport.
Another man was arrested for melatonin supplements used
for jet lag. Fair Trials International said last night that
extreme caution should be used for those traveling to Abu
Dhabi or Dubai, who note that cases like these have soared
in recent months.
Calls To Scrap Anti-Teenager Technology
in UK
The use of anti-teenager devices across the UK is being
challenged by The Children's Commissioner for England who
says such devices should be done away with because they deny
youths of their rights.
3,500 devices known as the mosquito are installed across
the UK which emit a frequency inaudible to over 25’s but
which causes considerable discomfort to teenagers in order
to stop gangs from loitering in certain areas.
The Children's Commissioner for England and other civil
liberties organizations have organized a campaign to promote
the idea of scrapping the mosquitoes and dispelling the
"increasingly negative" manner in which the UK deals with
its youth.

U.S.
Official Accused of Spying for China
A civilian official within the U.S. Department of Defense has been charged
with providing information on U.S. military technology to China. The case also
includes several Chinese citizens, some of whom have U.S. green cards.
The official has not yet been named; he or she and co-conspirators are
accused of illegally removing secret information from research facilities,
universities or laboratories that had access to the material.
The Justice Department is expected to announce the indictments on Feb. 11 in
Washington, D.C. The U.S. DOD official was expected to appear in a U.S. District
Court in Virginia.
Court Convicts Man of Murder; Hid Her Body in Steel Drum in Backyard in 1983
58-year-old Frederick Boyle, who pleaded not guilty in the murder of his wife
Edwina 23 years ago, has been convicted. He had stored her in the back yard of
his home on the southern outskirts of Melbourne using a steel drum.
Boyle said he found his wife, 30 years old at the time, dead from two gunshot
wounds to the head and a necktie of his tied around her throat while lying in
bed. Afraid he'd be a suspect since he was having an affair, he stashed the
body.
He said to the court, "Obviously, I didn't want to be charged with a murder I
didn't commit." The body was discovered by the husband of one of his two
daughters. He told them at the time that she had run off with a man who was a
truck driver.
Woman Died After Being in Contact With Second-Hand Smoking
A young waitress, who had asthma, died at her workplace. Her death was the
result of environmental tobacco smoke.
The waitres was quite healthy when arriving at her workplace. A bit later she
collapsed and passed away after 20 minutes. The autopsy showed that the woman
died from acute asthma, which is linked to work-related ETS (environmental
tobacco smoke).
Bars and restaurants in 23 states of U.S. have a smoking ban. A lot of
owners, however, are afraid that due to the ban they would soon be out of
business. |

Yahoo
Set to Reject Microsoft
News reports are stating that Yahoo! is set to reject Microsoft's US$44.6
billion take over bid on the grounds of it being inadequate. The unsolicited
offer amounts to US$31 a share, which is 62% more than the current price of
Yahoo's shares. A source close to Yahoo's dealings said the company was unlikely
to accept any offer that falls below US$40 a share, a level at which Yahoo's
shares were selling two years ago. Neither company has made an official comment
on the reports. |

John Ritter's Torn Aorta Was Treated as Heart Attack; Family Suing For $67m
The family of "Three's Company" actor John Ritter, who died from a torn aorta
in 2003, is bringing a $67 million suit against two doctors who treated him as
having had a heart attack instead. Their attorney, Moses Lebovits, says he can
prove it.
The family has already collected roughly $14 million in settlements involving
eight more medical workers and the hospital. Although it's claimed his doctor
didn't tell him of an enlarged aorta two years prior, their case focuses on not
taking X-rays.
Cardiologist Joseph Lee didn't X-ray Ritter's chest the night he died. Said
Lebovits, "He did absolutely nothing to rule out the existence of an aortic
dissection." It is likely the defense will argue that a 2001 body scan did not
show a bad aorta. |

Star Wars: The Clone Wars" Due for Summer Release
The animated Star Wars movie, "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" will be released in
cinemas on the 15th of August this year. The film is the same story, but
separate from, the 30 episodes of "The Clone Wars" which have already been made
for TV.
Star Wars creator George Lucas said: "I felt there were a lot more 'Star
Wars' stories left to tell. I was eager to start telling some of them through
animation and at the same time push the art of animation forward." |
