)New Illinois driving
laws will fail to make roads safer
Motor vehicle
crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers, with
thousands of deaths each year. The youngest licensed
drivers, 16-year-olds, have higher crash rates then all
other drivers of any other age. The economic impact of these
accidents is estimated to cost more then $40 billion, enough
to purchase all of Donald Trump’s assets nearly fifteen
times. But teenagers are not bad drivers

Teacher Flashes Breasts at Misbehaving Boy, Ordered to Compensate Him for Trauma
Sweden: A 47-year-old teacher who retaliated against a student who had filled
her blackboard with profanity and sexual images by flashing her breasts at him
has been fined and ordered to pay the equivalent of £395 in damages for trauma
to her victim.
Having taken into account the fact that the woman was fired from her job the
court fined her the equivalent of two months wages. Further charges relating to
allegations she groped two other male students were dismissed due to unreliable
testimony.
According to the teacher there was nothing sexual about her actions. "I just
snapped. I was trying to get him to stop writing and drawing filth on the
blackboard," she said.
World Press Photo Prize of Exhausted Soldier Wins
Out of 80,536 entries, Tim Hetherington of Britain won top prize for his
image of an exhausted soldier in Afghanistan.
Hetherington, who shoots for Vanity Fair magazine, will receive his award
10,000 euros ($14,620 US) at a ceremony in Amsterdam in April.
Getty Images Inc won 5 awards including 2 top awards for spot news singles
and spot news stories while Reuters came out with nothing, competitors
Associated Press placed in two categories.
Wal-Mart to Sell Less Crap
Wal-Mart has indicated it is willing to pay more for higher-quality products
that won't break as quickly and introduce less waste into the environment. The
retailer said it won't necessarily have to pass the cost on to the consumer.
"Bad-quality products create waste, and so having tighter standards ... will
reduce waste," said Wal-Mart's senior VP of sustainability. Sustainability will
keep costs down, he said. Wal-Mart's goal is to use only renewable energy and
waste nothing.
"We are looking at a very small amount of dollars and the savings in the
supply chain that we are finding because of sustainability, in some cases, will
more than offset the incremental costs ... of a better-quality item," said the
VP, Matt Kistler. |

A
down and out musician was playing his harmonica in the middle of a busy shopping
mall. Striding over, a policeman asked, "May I please see your permit?" I don't
have one," confessed the musician. "In that case, you'll have to accompany me."
"Splendid!" exclaimed the musician. "What shall we sing?" |

Update on Out-of-Control Spy Satellite
A 5,000-pound U.S. defense satellite which is hurtling toward the Earth (SN
reported) is expected to crash in the first week of March. About half its mass
is expected to survive re-entry into the atmosphere, with the rest burning up.
Government officials still don't know where the satellite will land. The
hazardous substance on board has been identified as hydrazine, a toxic fuel
which can cause respiratory irritation, convulsions, tremors and seizures.
A Canadian satellite tracker said the satellite's point of impact will be
difficult to predict until it is about 59 miles above the Earth. From that
altitude, there will be about 30 minutes before the satellite crashes |

February 20: Total Lunar Eclipse
On February 20 the earth will pass between the sun and the moon for a total
lunar eclipse - the third in a year. The spectacle will begin at 10:01 PM EST
and last for 51 minutes.
Viewers in the Americas will get the best view of the phenomena with western
Asia, Africa, and Europe also in a position to witness it.
During the eclipse the moon will be quite close to Saturn and the Regulus
from the Leo constellation in the sky. Light refracted from our atmosphere will
give the coppery red to orange glow during the event.
Pentagon: U.S. Military Might Not Be Able to Cope With Another Crisis
A classified Pentagon report says that because of the drawn-out wars in
Afghanistan and Iraq, the U.S. military is at "significant" risk of not being
able to handle another major incident elsewhere in the world.
Anonymous officials said the Pentagon should be expected to point to its
efforts to increase the military's size, upgrade its equipment and bolster
overseas alliances as ways of mitigating this risk.
Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen first said the risk was
significant last year, and says that it has not changed. He said troops' current
15-month tours of duty must be reduced to a year, with longer rests in between.
