SASKATOON - Police in Saskatoon are
considering charging a group of teenage boys who
started a "fight club" and posted videos of
their beatings online, including a clip showing
a teen getting kicked in the head. A video
titled No Quitters, shows a 16-year-old boy who
initially consented to a fist fight and was then
kicked in the head after he fell to the ground,
Insp. Rick Penny said Tuesday. The boy's mother
filed an assault complaint with police on the
weekend. Penny did not know the extent of the
boy's injuries or whether he went to hospital.
Four videos associated with the fight club had
been posted on YouTube, but the videos were
pulled recently from the popular website. Penny
said the video showing the boy being kicked in
the head was filmed in an alley and edited with
music and commentary. "While teens may think
these things are entertainment, they're sadly
mistaken," said Basil Hughton, principal of Aden
Bowman Collegiate. "People get hurt." The boy
who was kicked in the head was a Grade 10
student at Aden Bowman, but he transferred to
another school this week. Hughton said the boy's
mother assured the principal the transfer was
not linked to the fight club incident, although
the boy had talked about wanting to be accepted
at school. "To teenagers, having a friend is
probably the most important thing in life," said
Hughton.
East Timor Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Warning
An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale has triggered a tsunami
warning in East Timor although Indonesia's Meteorological and Geophysics Agency
says there have no reports so far of large waves. The earthquake struck about
262km north east of the capital, Dili, at a depth of 164km under the sea the US
Geological Survey say that no initial damages or injuries have been reported so
far.
2,000ft Asteroid Passes Earth
An asteroid known as 2007 TU24 will pass by earth at a distance of just
537,500 km today. According to astronomers it should be visible in a telescope
with an aperture of 3 inches or larger. It is the closest approach of an
asteroid of that size or larger expected before 2027. Another asteroid of
similar size, 2004 XP14, flew past earth at even closer range 18 months ago. "As
its closest approach is about one-and-a-half times the distance of Earth to the
moon, there is no reason for concern. On the contrary, Mother Nature is
providing us an excellent opportunity to perform scientific observations," said
Don Yeomans. |

State: Carnival ride that killed Alvin
teen needed inspection
15-year-old worker dies after piece falls on her
during dismantling of attraction
VICTORIA — A 15-year-old carnival worker died after being hit in the head
by a piece of a ride that was being dismantled — and a state insurance
official said the ride was overdue for inspection. Kelly Huff, of Alvin,
traveled to Victoria with a friend for work with Blue Ribbon Entertainment,
a Houston company operating rides at the carnival, her father, Larry Huff,
said. As workers dismantled the "Hammer Slammer" ride on Sunday, a piece
fell onto Huff's head. She died later at a local hospital. According to
state inspection records, the ride's yearly inspection expired in July 2007.
"This current operator was out of compliance with its yearly inspections,"
said Jerry Hagins, a Texas Department of Insurance spokesman. "They had not
provided us with proof of inspection." Hagins said operators obtain
inspections through third parties and then file proof with the department.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating Huff's
death, spokeswoman Diana Petterson said. A message left for Blue Ribbon
Entertainment was not immediately returned on Tuesday.
Childhood crises
Huff's short life was a difficult one, relatives said. She had reunited with
her father in November, years after the state terminated his parental rights
in 2002, Child Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olguin said. Huff was
in foster care beginning in 1998, Olguin said. Her mother, who has bounced
in and out of prison, has been unreachable for years. In 2003, a family
adopted the girl, but last year she accused her adoptive father of sexually
assaulting her. Her adoptive parents gave up their parental rights, and Huff
was allowed to stay with her father and grandmother on the condition that
social workers regularly visited the home. During a recent visit, Huff told
a social worker she had a new job as a carnival ticket taker. Crystal
Marshell said her cousin had enrolled in school and was doing well with her
father. "She was happy," Marshell said. "She was just a 15-year-old.
Beautiful, wild and smart."

"The thrill is gone from my marriage,"
Brian told his best friend Mike. "Why
not add some intrigue to your life, and
have an affair?" his friend suggested.
"But what if my wife finds out?" "Heck,
we are almost on the beginning of the
21st century, Brian. Go ahead and tell
her about it!" So Brian went home and
said, "Dear, I think an affair will
bring us closer together." "Forget it,"
said his wife. "I've tried that many
times - it never worked." |

Man Pays $25,000 to Get His Name on University Toilet
Venture Capitalist Brad Feld has paid the University of Colorado in Boulder
$25,000 for the naming rights to the men's toilet on the second floor in the
high tech hub. Feld reportedly made the same offer to his alma mater but was
rejected. For his thousands, Feld, who claims to have often been inspired while
on the toilet, gets a plaque with his name and the quote 'The best ideas often
come at inconvenient times. Don't ever close your mind to them'. "I just wanted
a plaque outside of the men's room to inspire people as they walk in to do their
business. It's a good time to reflect. It's a quiet moment," said Feld. |

Fly Naked? - Ja!
"We're a perfectly normal holiday company." It's just that this normal
holiday company lets you fly 'Au Natural'. German travel agency OssiUrlaub.de is
signing up passengers who will fly from the town of Erfurt to the Usedom resort
on the Baltic Sea. An idea by a customer took root: For about $735 (499 Euros)
you and 54 other passengers will be able to fly in the buff. Passengers are
required to remain clothed until boarding, and to dress before getting off. FKK,
as it's called in Germany (free body culture), has re-emerged since being banned
by the Nazi's during the second world war, mainly in eastern Germany. The
company says don't get the wrong idea, it wont be a mid-air swinger club. |

Fastest ATI Radeon Card Released by AMD
AMD's ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 GPU was released yesterday, the first card in the
industry to exceed one teraFLOP. It introduces a near-2:1 performance increase
over last fall's HD 3870. The suggested retail price will be $449 in the United
States.
Going well beyond 1080p, it employs 55nm process technology, which allows for
a doubling of performance-per-watt. It also fully supports DirectX 10.1, and the
ability to run up to four GPUs as one using CrossfireX - and just as quiet as
the HD 3870.
“With this launch we reaffirm our commitment to enthusiast performance
leadership and send a clear message that the ATI Radeon 3870 X2 is the new gold
standard of the PC gaming world,” said AMD's Graphics Products Group GM Rick
Bergman. |

Polish Man Unable To Return From The Dead
A Polish man, Piotr Kucy, 38, is having a hard time returning from the dead
thanks to government red-tape. Last August, authorities wrongly identified a
drowning victim as Kucy. Although he has pointed out to government officials
that he is alive, a registry office official contends that "This citizen does
not exist." Since he is "dead", Kucy has been unable to work, or pay social
insurance. As a bonus though, Kucy is not required to pay taxes
Dwarf Crime Getting Bigger
Swebus, a Swedish bus company that carries thousands of Brits around Sweden
has been targeted by luggage-encased dwarves. The thieves target buses by
concealing dwarves in sports bags that are placed in the luggage holds. After
the bus is underway, the dwarves exit their hiding spots to rifle through
others' luggage. Before reaching their destination, the dwarves return to
their own sports bags where they await to be picked up by other gang members.
Stockholm Police have indicated that they are "looking at our records to
identify criminals of limited stature."
