Teen accused in hijack plot will be returned to Calif.
The 16-year-old boy arrested after a plot to commandeer a flight into Nashville will be in Metro juvenile detention until he can be returned to California. The teen pleaded guilty to a charge of a delinquent act, according to the district attorney general's office. Juvenile Court Judge Betty Adams Green did not enter a disposition in this case, according to the release, and instead remanded the teenager to California to face state and potentially federal charges. he boy, whose name has not been released, is scheduled to remain in Metro's juvenile detention facility until secure transportation can be arranged. The boy was arrested Tuesday at the Nashville International Airport after a flight from Los Angeles. He had handcuffs, duct tape and other suspicious items in his possession and told investigators he had a plan to crash the plane. He also had possession of several other plane tickets, according to investigators. A FBI spokesman said the teen had a plan for a place he wanted to die, but wouldn't elaborate on the plot. The teen actually made no attempt to hijack the plane and was detained when the plane landed. Authorities wouldn't say where the tip came from. Nothing in the teenager's luggage was illegal, according to the Transportation Security Administration. "This case highlights the importance of integrating law enforcement and security," the agency said in a statement. "None of the items in his possession were prohibited. There is no reason to believe this is more than a one-time incident."

Teen acts polite in court

Assistant District Attorney General Jon Seaborg said the teenager's demeanor was pleasant and polite during his court appearance. There are lots of facts in this case where comments could be interpreted as a joke, but no one takes it as a joke these days," Seaborg said. Media reports indicated that the boy planned to crash into a Hannah Montana concert, but Seaborg said Miley Cyrus, the Franklin teenager who portrays the entertainment sensation on TV and in concert, was not addressed during the 15-minute hearing. Federal authorities said the focus of the plot was unconnected to her performance in Lafayette, La., actually planned for Friday. Mental health issues were raised during the hearing and they were taken into consideration, Seaborg said. The teen's appearance in court was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday and open to the news media, but Judge Green moved the hearing up. It was nearly complete well before any media arrived.

Man Tearing His Own Scalp Off Tasered by Police

A 30-year-old Montreal man was tasered by provincial police Tuesday afternoon when he was found to be "a threat to himself" and was violent. The man was locked inside a Greyhound bus bathroom and ripping off pieces of skin from his scalp. About 90 minutes into the ride, riders noticed the bathroom was locked with someone inside, so the bus driver forced the door open at a St-Isidore, Quebec, service center and found a man with blood pouring down his head. He was not carrying a weapon. Authorities don't know if mental problems or drugs were a factor in the individual's behavior at the time of the incident. His violent demeanor was was a threat to police responding to the scene, said Constable Pierre Dubois.

Man Goes to Buy Pants Girlfriend Kept Nagging Him For, Wins Almost $800k

Sammy Zabib, 42, won almost $800,000 while he went to a casino boutique to purchase a pair of designer jeans for his girlfriend Anna, who'd been on his case for a week to buy them for her. Zabib said "She was mad. We had an argument. More than one." The New York limousine manager drove three hours Friday morning to get to the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, waking up at 5 a.m. Friday. He took along a photocopy showing the $149 Dojo 7-brand jeans so he wouldn't get the wrong pair. Zabib said, "I was just trying to kill time until the store opened so I could get her those jeans. Then the machine stopped working. I didn't know why, so I called security. They came over, took a look at it, and said, 'You won the jackpot!'"

"The thrill is gone from my marriage," Brian told his best friend Mike. "Why not add some intrigue to your life, and have an affair?" his friend suggested. "But what if my wife finds out?" "Heck, we are almost on the beginning of the 21st century, Brian. Go ahead and tell her about it!" So Brian went home and said, "Dear, I think an affair will bring us closer together." "Forget it," said his wife. "I've tried that many times - it never worked."

Hospital Patient Finds Severed Mouse Head Among His Steamed Veggies

In Helsinki, a mouse head was found by a hospital patient while eating steamed vegetables. Northern Karelia Central Hospital's chief administrator Sakari Kela said "Understandably, he lost his appetite." Kela noted that the patient, from the eastern town of Joensuu, did not suffer any ill effects from the severed head. The most likely explanation for the source of the head was a bag of vegetables from Belgium. She added that the whereabouts of the rest of the mouse is unknown, and being "a Belgian mouse, the rest of it could be anywhere in Europe."

Music Isn't Illegal to Download Anymore

Starting today, over 25 million different songs can be had for free on a new service called Qtrax. It's a move which the music industry hopes will win back customers by giving them what they want. EMI, Warner and Universal all endorse the project. They are hoping that limited advertising on the Qtrax website will be tolerated considering their selection of free music. It will employ peer-to-peer software, and in April an iPod compatibility solution will be announced. Proportional payouts to record companies, artists and publishers will be made based on the music's popularity, to be logged using Digital Rights Management software. Qtrax encourages users to "dock" monthly so they can get your play history..

Duck Who Can Dance, Count and Sing a Hit in China

China: Xingxiang city resident Du Xinai owns a duck who has been getting a lot of attention lately for his peculiar behavior. His duck, Bengbeng (Silly), wears tiny shoes and a red scarf and can count, dance, and even sing. Every day when he goes to the agricultural market nearby, Bengbeng follows along. "Each day someone asks him to dance or sing or count. If you ask him to sing, he quacks rhythmically while shaking his head and body. He quite enjoys it," he said. "If you put up one finger, he quacks once, then twice with two fingers, and so on," he said, adding that the duck may be a super star, but "If he sees me waiting for a green light, he stops also, and waits quietly for the colour to change."

Salvation Army Kettle Thief Forced to go Homeless as Punishment

Ohio: 28-year-old Nathan Smith received what many call Painesville Municipal Court Judge Michael Cicconetti's trademark: spend 24 hours as a homeless person. Smith was caught just before Christmas stealing a Salvation Army donation kettle. After being on the streets for seven hours, he said "It's not that bad. But I'd hate to have to do this every day, especially in this weather. It's too cold to do it in this," he said in a police lobby. Smith could've taken a 90-day stint in jail. He had to turn in his pockets' contents and wear a GPS ankle bracelet. With no advice he was let out onto the streets. "I didn't want him to have any money on him. I want him to learn. It's not going to hurt to be a little cold," said the judge.

Teacher Steals Students' Underwear at Knifepoint

Japan: Police have arrested a teacher after he allegedly approached a group of eight 12- and 13-year-old boys playing in the playground of another school and demanded their underwear at knifepoint. Two of the boys were able to escape but the remaining six were compelled to remove their pants and hand over their underwear. He also stole a phone from one student and has reportedly been prank calling his house. Police have declined to comment on the case but the principal of the Tokyo school where the teacher teaches has appeared on local television describing him as a dedicated teacher.

Plumber Finds 200 Fake Legs, Crutches in Floor; Owners Send to Quake Victims

A stash of roughly 200 crutches, artificial limbs and walking frames were discovered by a plumber who was working on Mike and Teresa Sutton's home in Bridport, Dorset. They were tucked under floorboards in the cellar, but they now have a destination. The couple is going to send the items to the Kashmir region of Pakistan, where 2005 quake victims are in need of them. A prosthetic hand was also found. Mike, 65, said "We didn't even know we had a cellar, let alone what was in it." Limbless Association chairman Zafar Khan is assisting in the shipment, and says it will be an improvement on the uncomfortable, heavy wooden prostheses currently in use there, which aren't very functional with knee joints of poor quality.
